SPASJ is Back on Campus for the Fall Semester!

With the fall semester starting at San Jose State University, SPASJ is back on campus! Welcome back Spartans!

SPASJ would like to update our supporters on the progress we have made so far in 2014. In the spring, SPASJ held a kick-off BBQ event on campus. The BBQ was a great success. Hundreds of passing by students, faculty, and staff stopped to learn about Japanese American internment and the history of the men's gymnasium (Uchida Hall) at San Jose State. Most of the passerbys were unaware of this piece of SJSU's history, even though they may have walked past, or even had classes, in Uchida Hall. The BBQ spurred intellectual conversation, promoted awareness, and of course delicious food was served.

With the unveiling of the Uchida Hall - which was under construction for the past year - students are catching a glimpse of the almost forgotten about building. Uchida Hall's sparkling facade brings newness and rejuvenation to campus.

SPASJ is on a mission to complete this project and serve 'historical justice'. Currently, the organization is working with the SJSU planning board, local artists, and the community to devise a proposal for the memorial. The blog will continue to be updated weekly to keep everyone in the loop and to spark stimulating discussion.

Thank you so much for all of your support and your interest in a very important, and often forgotten, part of history.

Best,
Students for Public Art as Social Justice
